As a retired healthcare professional, Debbie (name changed for privacy) was most looking forward to spending more time with her family.
But her health was stopping her from living life to the full.
Debbie had spinal stenosis and suffered with hypertension and chronic back pain. As a result, she had to use a walker. Her doctor had prescribed several medications, but none of them really fixed the root causes of her problems.
Debbie was determined that her health would not stop her from enjoying her hard-earned retirement. She recognized that she needed guidance to make the right changes. She wanted to be able to play with her grandchildren again, without pain, and without medications.
Fortunately, many chronic conditions that afflict us later in life can be put into remission with healthy lifestyle change.
With support from her primary care doctor at Lifestyle Medical, Debbie started by focusing on nutrition. She followed our nourishment principles – whole foods, mostly plant-based. Together, we reviewed her diet in detail, and identified specific healthy foods that she loved for her to eat more of. This helped her to cut down on less nourishing foods, while still enjoying her meals.
Debbie began to gradually, but consistently, lose weight. Her pain was greatly reduced, and her confidence was sky-high. She no longer needed her walker! Now, her grandchildren have to keep up with her.
Don’t let your health get in the way of enjoying the retirement that you deserve.
